MI Options offers two vital services to support LGBTQ+ aging adults and their loved ones:
- Medicare Counseling provides personalized, one-on-one guidance from SHIP-certified (State Health Insurance Assistance Program) counselors to help Medicare-eligible individuals, their caregivers, and loved ones navigate complex insurance choices and make informed decisions. Medicare Counseling can help with things like:
-
- Clarifying what Medicare does and doesn’t cover
- Understanding Medicare eligibility and enrollment
- Exploring coverage options and making changes during the Annual Election Period (Open Enrollment)
- Managing out-of-pocket costs and identifying cost-saving programs
- Understanding how Medicare works with supplemental policies, retiree coverage, Medicaid, and other insurance
- Determining who pays first when multiple insurers are involved
- Knowing your rights (or your loved one’s) under Medicare
Person-Centered Options Counseling (PCOC) helps LGBTQ+ older adults and their families make informed decisions about long-term services and supports—such as in-home care, assisted living, long-term care insurance, and legal planning (including power of attorney and healthcare proxies). Through in-depth, respectful conversations, participants explore their goals, interests, values, and preferences. Counselors help identify available options, clarify priorities, and pair personal resources with community-based services that align with the individual’s vision for their life.
